I am currently studying to become a florist but my other passion is baking. I was thinking of opening a store called "Bake & Bloom"
The shop would be kind of seperated with cakes, pastries & coffee at one end & the florist at the other. I could offer good deals for weddings because they could arrange thier cake & flowers with the same business. I also have a lot of contacts in the real estate industry & could put together settlement packs containing a 6 pack of cupcakes & a floral arrangement.
I would obviously need quite a lot of money & a few staff to start with but I think it would be really unique & do well.
What do you think?
I liked the idea. It's a way to leverage the space you need for the business and you're doing what you like.
However, dealing with two businesses at the same time might be overwhelming (granted at the same location). And depending on which state and localities you live in, you may need to get approval from the health department. On one hand you're dealing with food on another live products that may have potential contaminant from fertilizer affecting the first. Plus depending if you're going to have a kitchen in the facility, you may have other challenges as well.
If you have the resources and can manage the logistics, go for it. Though I would suggest that you start with a business plan for each, balance which one will require the least capital with the best chance of survival. Start with that one as your first fully concentrated business, then once you manage to get it going, expand and add the second business.
Things may be different on the permits if for example you have an ice cream shop at one side and a pastry shop on another, because the type of licenses for the two are similar.
it could work…but you would have to be dedicated and you would have to be really good from the start so that you can make a good name for yourself. Since the majority of your profit will come from people hiring you for big events, you can never screw up. You ill become known from word of mouth. People will go to an event, and if it's really good [or really bad] they will ask who did the event. You will need a great bakery AND a great floral shop to convince people that getting both from you is a good idea, rather than going to the best bakery and the best florist in town.
I have a nagging doubt. Both are business' that rely on smells. Wouldn't the smell of the flowers ruin the smell of the baking bread?
