I work 2 jobs right now; a fast food restaurant and I work at a nursing home as a housekeeper. They both pay really poorly. I go to college too, but am no where near being done. I've wanted to take the class to become a CNA so I could make decent money before I figure out what I want to do. Health field interests me but I'm not sure if I could deal with some of the messy parts about it. Do you get used to it, is it bad?
Honestly it depends on where you are going to work. I worked in a couple of nursing homes and I got used to the smells and the bad stuff (bed sores). Sometimes you never really get over the deaths. I thought I would get used to people passing away and then one of my favorites passed and it was a little rough. They say not to get attached but it happens.
There is also home health care. You could be doing anything from grocery shopping to cleaning their house to giving them showers/baths.
I worked in home health also and it is a lot easier on your back then a nursing home. But there is a lot of driving in your car.
Now I work with MR-DD individuals in their home and it's the best job I have worked so far. There is behaviors where I work, (hitting, stuff thrown at you), but I wouldn't trade it to go back to a nursing home. Also you might not even need to get your CNA for it.
If your lucky you could get on at the local hospital and they usually will pay for further education once you have been there awhile.
better than fast food by far.
