I definitely think all office buildings should turn off their lights at night time. But the unfortunate thing is in some major cities in big buildings, lights are left on and it's a waste of electricity. What does everyone else think about this?
Of course! its such a waste of electricity! and money
They leave the lights on because it is less expensive to leave the lights on than to replace the lamps which burn out faster being turned off and on regularly. Flourescent tubes left on have a much greater service life. The cost of the lamps, ballasts, and someone to replace them is much more expensive than paying for the electricity to run them.
Any facility being run on this program likely also has an upgraded HVAC system that is saving electricity with their modern climate controls. Laws have been passed requiring a 30% reduction in energy use among HVAC equipment, this far outweighs the energy use of the lighting.
On a side note, construction sites are required to leave the lights on because lawyers have successfully argued that criminals injured on jobsites would have not been injured had there been adequate lighting. What a crock…
Yes. Theoretically.
Many people are still working hard at night. Some companies are working 24 hrs per day due to globalization. In morning, they are working on local issues whereas at night they are working on issues in the other side of the world.
You can't say they are wasting electricity because they are adding value with electricity.
I think if I truly live in a free country and I'm paying for the electricity I should be able to leave the lights on, turn on the heat and air conditioning and open all the windows as I drive home in my gas guzzelling suv running over bunnies and squirrels whether you like it or not. When should I come over to your house so I can observe the things you do that "offend" me so I can tell you how to live your life so it suits me?
To keep an office building completely in the dark would be as stupid as having no lights on in a home. I always have a light on in the house and on the porch.
The darkness is what thieves love the best that way nobody sees them stealing. Vandals love the darkness so they can destroy property. I don't want to even think of what other creepy people prefer a dark building to the light.
There is always someone somewhere cleaning the building, try cleaning in the dark, should the security people wander the building in the dark? How you do you know there isn't people working the night shift?
yes with there is absolutely no one in there…a lot of buildings that have lights on in major cities have actual people still inside such as security and maids that u may not be aware of…
So here we all are buying energy efficient products, we're switching everything off of stand-by when it's not in use & the office blocks down the road leave their lights on all night, every night!
There's no sense in it.
yes in this of high energy costs and wasteful energy it is the wright thing 2 do we need 2 save every where we can especially at night ive never understood the theory it wood ward off thieves they cant see 2 well in the dark so turn them off
yep turn them all off the cleaners can use candles to see what they are doing
OR get the cleaners to turn then off when the job is finished
They definitely should turn off their lights to save electricity.
Yes, after they tuck in all the homeless people that should be sheltered there.
Yes I do think that they should turn them off.
Changing profession?
I certainly do.
i know that bothers me too!! its a huge waste. we should stop them, somehow, someway.
I like Theo Paphitis and James Khan.
peter jones
theo and james, jesus mtor you like the tanned fellows?
I'd opt for Evan, the presenter type bloke who isn't actually a dragon.
My wife quite fancies the giant 7ft 5in dragon Peter Jones
As a straight bloke, I suppose it'd have to be deborah meaden… although its only through default!
puff,the magic one.
Are you sure?
Peter Jones. I would. And he's got a lovely big …

I need to know.

Because he is not a thug and is innocent.
whats Liverpool United? It's Liverpool FC. Sorry you're asking the wrong one as a Liverpool supporter, proved innocent simple as!!!
You get the kind of 'justice' that you can afford!
The charges that he is facing (the ABH was dropped) does not warrant him being held on remand, also he is not considered a 'flight risk'.
because he is arguably the best footballer in the world right now
Cos he is a footballer and therefore untouchable!
innocent till proven otherwise,
We need him for the England squad.
because the court said he could and is innocent
Strange is it not?
a street walker?
sounds like one of rooney's pick ups

theres no such things as ghosts
prince charles is a very happy man because of that
I had a very wierd experience in Teignmouth Cemetry in Devon. I used to go out with a girl who lved on the edge of the cemetry and we used to sit on a bench in the cemetry under the moonlight overlooking the sea until the early hours of the morning. One night at about 2.am in the morning we heard the the laughing and playing of children. I asked my girlfriend if she had heard any children and she said she had. Then to our amazement we saw three very young children dancing around, dressed in smocks. This happened for about a minute until they disappeared into the moonlight.
When we went back to her house that morning the lights started to flicker on and off and something pulled our sheets off whilst we were sleeping. Then something cold came close to my cheek and kissed me. We were pretty scared but still sceptical .
The next day we both were walking near the spot of the incident in the cemetry and looking at all the gravestones. We were amazed when we saw a very old grave that bore the names of three children who died in the early 19th century at the ages of 2,4and 6. I am sure that these were the children we saw. As a sign of respect I always lay flowers on their graves when I visit Devon.
Ok that picture looks abit suspect to me, I don't think thats a real ghost. BUT, there is such a thing as ghosts. I had one in my previous house and have experienced it first hand.
I think we are all spirits in a human body and when we 'die' the spirit continues on into another level of life.
No and the thing is you actually could calculate it using the law of conservation of energy. Which is the foundation of physics.
Spooky-I was just about to ask a question on this!!
I dont know but I have a friend who would swear on her life she saw a figure in her house when she was alone.
These pictures are pretty convincing-it certainly makes you wonder
Wooooooo
Wooooooooooooooo
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
EDIT - lol at Steve!
EDIT - spooky as our house was built in 1850s. So there must be loads on ghosts…
YES… and they are closer to you than you can ever imagine… If there are any buildings near you that are 100 years old or older… they will have at least ONE spirit in them
There are no such thing as ghosts.
The dead know, feel & can hear nothing.
They are no more.
No.
Christians called it the Holy Ghost
Stop research.I have spent a lot to find 1.No results.
Sure. You'll be questioning the reality of fairies next!
ive seen a ghost in my house twice and in my friends house she oftens see's her dead grandparents
yeah, you're face is a ghost!
poop face!
(and I'm not a virgin! I promise!)
they do exist,me and my son saw one at the same time
yes i seen one
saw a question on here asking if you think her dad did it……i have never seen a man trying so hard to keep himself together, he is clearly devastated, he is a broken man. i hope she turns up, but somehow i doubt it.
No, I don't think her dad did it at all. Sadly in my heart I think a body will be found and not a live person. Something similar happened a couple of years ago in my home town when a student was befriended by one of his tutors. The tutor was murdered and after an investigation it was found out that the student had done it. One thing is almost certain - you don't get away with murder so if this has happened - expect a knock at the door whoever you are.
Jammin - sorry to hear you experienced this kind of thing but you sound one very angry individual. We are only giving our opinions to the question asked. I think we all pray for a good outcome.
Her Dad did what ? The woman is still missing. For anyone who has experienced a loved one missing and I did once for ten days it is the most horrible feeling you can imagine.
After five and a half years I still find it traumatic to recall that experience even though it had a positive outcome.
Fortunately the lady in my case was found again. She was unwell and on medication which had lapsed. That ten days seemed like ten years to me. It is standard police practice in these cases to first visit and thoroughly search the home of the person who makes the report.
I thought this strange at first when it happened to me but with their help I realised these specialist police have their reasons their procedures and know exactly what they are doing.
Already in this awful recent case its like the british public are hungry for another sinsiter scenario to emerge for their sick ghoulish imaginations to feed off as with anything in the media which involves the most horrific of peoples personal life circumstances. Jumping to bizarre conclusions. What on earth is wrong with you british people at all ?
I would advise the many negative minded public in britain that unless any of you can be of practical help toward finding where this woman is then just watch your ridiculous warped soaps to quench that innate perverted voyeuristic thirst for other peoples misery. Sick society britain again !
Let us hope with all we can muster that this woman is found safe and well and all be on full alert for any clue that may assist in achieving that.
I agree. I answered that earlier question and if Helen S knows the dad persoanlly as she says she does (I have no reason to doubt that) then I totally trust her when she says he didnt do it.
I think too much time has passed now for her to be found alive. I really feel for her poor dad.
I dont think her Dad did it.Are the police not working on the premise that it was a new boyfriend or someone she was on a date with?
Its such a shame-she is a very beautiful girl
She got kicked out. My sister in law, Claudia, was kicked out a few weeks ago from our home.
shes still alive
so the butler did it
Is it just me of should he have not seen that it was a cliff. It seems that we are having a driving culture of
"Oh there is a cliff there"
"The robot says go"
What ever happened to common sense.
All is explained when you realise he was driving a BMW.
A friend of mine was following his sat-nav and it told him to 'turn right at the next junction, then continue for two miles…'
The only problem was - the next junction was a dead end with a factory (that had obviously been there a looooong time) right across the end of it ! No-way could he have driven two miles down that road !
My friend 'common sense' is very far from being a common commodity.
When mine tells me to do something that I know to be incorrect, I do the correct thing and the sat nav realigns itself.
Not too difficult ………… is it?
Common sense is near a thing of the past.
yeh i thought this was stupid aswell i think you would turn round if you saw you were on top of a cliff

Council bans nonsense words ………… full list below…
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7949077.stm
Do you know of any words that should be added to this list ?
People who use words like that should be shot….along with those that insist on correcting other YA users spelling and grammar…;)
No, I dont know what you mean……lolol
What a valuable thing for councils to be spending their time with. Banning words will no doubt end the credit crisis, solve homelessness, reduce teenage pregnancy and generally make Great Britain great again.
A lot of these words dont even seem to make sense!I work for the civil service and the amount of time stationary has had to be changed due to ''new words' is unreal
In promulgating their esoteric cogitations they should beware of platitudinous ponderosity

I suppose it spares us the chore of electing a President as head of state. I'm racking my brains for any other reason to keep the descendants of medieval gangsters in comfort.
I like the Monarchy - they bring tourism to the UK, work tirelessly to promote Britain and bring in jobs and can speak out against things they dont agree with. Prince Charles is doing a fantastic job in South America on climate change. He is promoting sustainability and profitability amongst some of the worlds poorest communities.
What would a president do for the UK?
I think the changes are good - although presumably that will mean that the royal family will no longer be heads of the church of England because they can't sometimes be and then sometimes not when we get a catholic? Though I don't suppose that will matter much.
Anyway - what's their point? Dunno really. I doubt we'll have a monarchy in 100 years from now. It would be a shame to see Buck Palace and Windsor Castle empty of royals somehow. It's tradition and heritage and good for tourism!!! Lucky them hey!
It isn't a system they'd devise for today - but we're stuck with it for now. Tony Blair had an opportunity to go with public feeling after the death of princess Diana and abolish the monarchy. He didn't. So….here we are for now.
They're in case Chuck Norris tries to invade Britain, send in Prince Harry. Speaking as a committed Irishman who should be committed himself i can not find any reason to have a British monarchy. Apparently they only cost each person in Britain 1p a week. Yep thats 1p a week taken from their wages whether they like it or not. I think they should have a choice, a vote on it. If a maggot was feeding on an open sore on your leg you'd swat it so why do they feel the need to give money to somebody already worth 3 billion?
To the first poster it is not just about tourism! Having a monarchy is part of British culture, our heritage!!! Being a monarchy is something that Britain has been proud to be for a long time now. The queen is our head of state, the person that I when I was a soldier swore allegiance to as well my country! And I was bloody proud to do it too!
This government, the left wing liberals and immigrants are already grinding the last remnants of our culture into the ground, they already want every vestige of Britishness destroyed and we cant let them!!! I think it is important that we keep the monarchy to show that we are still Great Britain!
Plus if we didnt have the monarchy how else would Prince Phillip get in the news and give us all a bloody good laugh every time he puts his foot in it?
there is no point to it now, as the article says it is outdated, they are still in their little world of having balls, parties, and if they got the chance, beheading each other plus abusing us peasants.
its a long history but totally abused at the expense of others, how can a law so archaic still be around, well that one really does explain a lot.
they couldn't give a toss if you fell on your sword as long as you shout long live the King/Queen. that will not be the only block that is due to racism, religious, status etc.
its exactly the same as our parliament and house of lords, it time to move on, they need to live in reality. their parasites.
just my opinion.
There you have some dithering old geriatric as monarch which really given the british attitude to life is fairly appropriate.
God man that country needs to get some postitivity about it and its miserable negative people. What a grim place.
So old hat old fashioned and stuck in the dismal past !!
Lend uz a fiver lol. ??
So the alternative is a president and you will come out with the crap of oh well it is better that he be elected missing the point entirely that a Sovereign with certain rights is better than a president with lots of them (Mugabe) The other thing is that if yu think it wil save you a bit of money think again it will not
So the people can have a family who.Respect family values.Show so
much concern for the people.Who show the government embarrassment in frugal living.Who don't take advantage of their position to abuse of of the law.Like removing family members.Etc.There's so much for us to look up to them for.
God Save The Queen.
From even more hypocrisy.
I have to say I like having a monarchy. It has the old fashioned romance to it and also encourages tourists and money to England. Otherwise we'd be not worth visiting - cold weather and no palaces? Nah.
Thumbs down? Boooooo hissssssss!
i heard the illuminati hated Monarchy and oath to destroy it
hmm..the beginning of the end?
anyone heard of the black pope?
are the two great Empires colliding each other?
I agree i dont like the monarchy. In reality they have no power.
As far as i can see it is only there to:
Put a picture on a stamp
Put pictures on money
Tourism.
Brown should just p*ss off he just seems to run around changing irrelevant things left right and centre instead of focusing on getting us out of this turd hole he has dug us.
To please old people and foreigners visiting, as for most people I know they would rather have an elected head of state.
The alternative would be Z-list pseudo-celebs like Jade Goody.
In this day and age? Tourism. It's as simple as that.
None whatsoever. Off with their heads!!!
so that they can have loads of our money of course
tourism and spending taxpayers money! i agree with mad mike brown should be sorting this mess he's got us all in!
I thought I heard that if you lodged a tax return last year, you were eligible, but then I've read somewhere else that you had to be getting a Centrelink payment to receive it (which I don't.)
Also, my husband thinks it goes on our combined income, but I earn much less than him a year, does anyone know who exactly is eligible?
There are two lots of payments. One from Centrelink and one from the ATO. The Centrelink one is a $900 payment for single income families and $950 for each school aged child if you receive FTB A and FTB B.
These payments should have been receive by 20th March.
The ATO payment is completely seperate and has nothing to do with Centrelink. It is paid to anyone who has lodged a 07/08 tax return and earned less than $100000. It is also a $900 payment. This payment starts rolling out from 6th April for 6 weeks from that date. People who have lodged their tax returns get paid first.
That's how Centrelink explained it to me, because I was confused as well with the two lots of $900.
I hope this helps.
OMG this question must have been asked 1000 times..
The payments for children at school and Single income families have already gone out.
The second lot of payments happen in april and will be paid by the taxation department. Follow this link for details.
http://www.ato.gov.au/corporate/content.asp?doc=/content/00178930.htm&page=1&H1
Go to centrelink.gov.au then click on Important Messages which includes Household Stimulus Package and who qualifies. If you havn't got paid by now then I would say you do not qualify. Parents with tax benefit Part B, and students I think get it.
the news is always so depressing would giving it up make you happier
i wouldnt watch the news much if it wernt for my husband , i dont mind watchin the regional news but the main news is always full of murders, rape an wars i dont really want to listen to that everyday,
oh an of course the recent politician to rip us off so yes i would be happier not to watch the news ,rather buy a paper an skip through what i dont like
ABSOLUTELY . . . . .
Not watching the news would make ME much happier . . .
having said that . . . . I'm "old fashioned" and I think I have a responsibility to actually DO something about my country . . . and the problems we face.
That's why I DO watch the news . . . listen to Sean Hannity . . . Rush Limbaugh . . . and why I'm attanding a "Tea Party" (protest) on April 15th.
Dan in Miami
Well, not entirely. But I realised that switching to a weekly magazine such as The Economist is a win-win trade-off: you escape the sensationalist aspect of daily news, you get more perspective, you only get the topics that matters and you are not bombarded by dramatisation of topics such as Jade Goody etc…
So I think it's important to be informed, but daily newspapers are a let-down.
I gave it up years ago, that includes talk shows which are the worse, and yes I am a much happier person.
I still remember giving it up for a year, the last thing I saw was stuff about Congress the MidEast and the environment.. when I turned it on a year later it was the same stuff didn't miss a thing!
Yes, I suppose I would be happier if I didn't watch or read the news because it is depressing, but I do like to read and watch news that angers me or frustrates me as I can make my opinion based on all the facts presented.
I say presented, as lets me honest what news story is not told with a slant?
I have for years avoided reading the negative day to day stories on crime, celebrity bullshit and the like.
I try to only read pieces on actual issues and opinion concerning the same.
I believe that cutting out all those negative and to me irrelevant stories have made me happier.
They should have 2 different news programmes. The" good" news and the "bad" news programmes so that pessimists and optimists could be both catered for
They can show famine pestilence hunger death disease, as long as there's "and finally, a skate boarding dog" i'm as happy as a pig is very fluffy shi'te.
I gave up watching the news as it was too depressing.
Started watching cartoons instead.
Now my wife is trying to get me sectioned
Seems i am destined to be Depressed or suppressed
Yes it will make you depressed. You can still watch the news just don't get inundated with it.
ignorance is not actually bliss. you cant be happier by playing dumb.. and plus your thirst for knowledge will need to be satisfied.
Unless we numb ourselves with drugs and alcohol?
omg no….seeing that traumatised, broken lady and devestated worried to death man, just two stories, it reminds me how lucky i am
No. You would just become more unaware. It's not ALL doom and gloom. Buy a decent paper and you will find lots of other stuff.
I avoid the news, and am fairly happy.
It does.
