Info on a Psychology course?

I am thinking of doing a psychology course, I have heard it is a science based course.

Is it science as in not actually doing experiments again like at school, but more verbal facts of science as i hated science at school?????

Doing most subjects at University is very different to studying them at school for a wide range of reasons.

Firstly, however, make sure that any psychology course you're interested in is accredited by the British Psychological Society - it doesn't count for professional practice if it isn't (which may be one reason for those unemployed graduates!)

It is science, but often referred to as a 'soft' science in that you are less looking for 'facts' and more for quantifiable tendencies.

There is a lot of maths and statistics in psychology - which is the main reason I didn't do it! It's probably not for you if you don't like/aren't prepared to do lots of stats.

I'd suggest you get hold of the first year reading list for a psychology degree you're potentially interested in (some universities will put them online, so do have a rummage around) and have a read of some of the core texts and see if you find them interesting (or not).

I agree with half of Mrs Doubtfires answer about Psychology being more research based…you won't actually have to carry out lab experiments its science based in terms of studying a bit of the brain, and statistics etc.

However in terms of jobs Mrs Doubtfire overgeneralises! I know many psychology students who are pursuing careers in the same field and my sister is one of them. There's alot to get into like working with children and famillies, research, domestic violence, educational psychology, play therapy, occupational therapy etc. so don't let that put you off. Its a good degree to have.

No, it's not at all like Physics or Chemistry experiments, . more like "finding out how groups of people" react to certain questions or situations..,

But beware, there are more unemployed Psychology graduates out there, looking for jobs than any other subject except "Media Studies" !

Go have lunch in MacDonalds… see how many graduate Psychologists are serving up your fries.

I mean -if You were an employer, would you be seeking a graduate Psychologist?

Not on your life! You'd want someone who could do your kind of work…

It is a science but not an 'experiments with chemicals' one, you will still carry out experiments but they will be ones like how does the brain react when this happens and why? etc.

Another thing, I spoke to Cambridge uni today and they dont accept Psychologyat A Level as a science subject so it cant be classed as a main science.

the only science part is the testing and statistics. not a major issue.

Can you name me some. Thank you!

Just because that is where the art is doesn't mean that that is where the good universities are. I haven't heard of any good Italian programs there, and most American universities just have short-term study abroad programs, such as a few weeks in summer, there. An exception is Syracuse University, which seems to have a masters program in Florence.

I got 2.83 in my freshmen year, and than I got a 1.83 recently in my sophomore year right now. But how? I got B for my math, C- for social study, C for Science, and a D for English (I missed up a few projects). Was the average really 1.83? I got 2 D's in freshmen year and I got 2.83. Someone help me.

It depends how your school calculates GPA and if they are calculating a cumulative (all of the semesters you have taken) GPA or a semester GPA. Remember as the semesters pass, the Cs, Ds, and Fs can really hurt your GPA.

Hello, I am a famous bridge from history. I was built by a consul in Antiquity and repaired by a monk during the Middle Ages. I was also the site of a very famous battle! http://i37.tinypic.com/16jq24y.jpg

It's the Milvian Bridge in Italy.

Mulvian Bridge, Latin Pons Milvius or Pons Mulvius. It was built by Marcus Aemilius Scaurus in 109 B.C. over the Tiber near Rome as part of the Flaminian Way. By defeating Maxentius here in A.D. 312, Constantine I became the unchallenged ruler of the West. It was here that Constantine saw the cross in the sky.

What are you guys opinions for war?

Hi guys could you tell me your personal opinions/thoughts/reactions to war?

I say, war is where someone exist without Brain and Logic.

we are humans and God's gave us one of the most unbelievable inventions, Language to talk to each other, and F**k our problems just talking and without any struggle.

so something like war in 2 way happens, first someone doesn't know any language to talk, 2nd someone doesn know how to use it's ability to talk, then he/she called stupid, consequently war is stupid.

and reactions, of course when someone try to bruise your rights you won't be quiet and just look at what it's doing, you just fight and get back your rights.

War is all about whoever supplies the arms in the first place. If you can control who makes & owns the guns, then you control who is able to start wars & who isn't. It's amazing to look at the history of who supplies who. I mean the USA supplied arms to Afghanistan so that the Afghans could defend themselves against the invading Russians. Then Ossama Bin Laden of Afghanistan orchestrates Sept 11 & Afghanistan is public enemy no. 1 with the USA & the arms the USA supplied to them are used against US & allied soldiers stationed in Afghanistan to look for Ossama. The irony is ridiculous & it's happened so much in history.

As far as the Iraq & George Bush thing goes, I've always been in 2 minds about it. I think there were weapons of mass destruction but Sadaam was smart enough to destroy them, but he naively thought he wouldn't be invaded so long as they couldn't be found. On the one hand the invasion of Iraq is terrible re all the deaths & it's none of America's business to be there, but I can also see the other side. As in, what it was like for people to live in fear under a dictator. If you read the details of what Sadaam & his regime was like, you'd be shocked. The worst was Sadaam's son, Uday. To read the details of the daily torture he inflicted on people is just mind boggling. He was like the worst sado-masochist & the worst serial killer that you can imagine. the gory details are just horrific. So when I think of those details, I can see the good side of the invasion of Iraq. I think if I lived there I'd rather have the chaos that is there now, compared to the dictatorship that was there before. And I would certainly be pleased that Sadaam & his sone Uday, are no longer alive.

Also it's nice what people are saying above, war is bad, etc but the bottom line is that all countries need a military in case they are invaded. And for small countries they have to rely on the nearest large country to help them out if invaded. If a large country decided to not invest in having a military then they would be invaded & taken over by another large country. So what can you do? You have to spend money on military personnel, etc.

it is so unreal and very unnecessary to be waging a war against other countries. in this time and age,we are already educated much on how to deal with territorial problems and we should no longer resort to taking up arms against other countries.

many innocent civilians are dying because of war and instead of the budget being alloted for basic services like food and education are given to military services which are all a waste of time.

I personally believe it's horrible and unnecessary. In this day and age we should be able to settle disputes in a civilized manner. Killing others does not fit under said category.

I love it. War makes the world go 'round.

I'm graduating from college this semester and am absolutely clueless as to what I'm going to do with my life! Anybody have any ideas of ways to figure it out? Any brainstorming exercises I could use to come up with things? Thanks!

There are a couple of good books you ought to check out:

I Could Do Anything if I only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It by Barbara Sher

What Color Is Your Parachute: A Practical Manual for Job Hunters and Career Changers by Richard Nelson Bolles

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/What-Color-Is-Your-Parachute/Richard-Nelson-Bolles/e/9781580088671/?itm=1

Both have exercises to do. I way prefer the first one, but the second one is better known.

Chances are, your main goals will be to find a way to make an income, whether that's a job or starting a business, and finding a place to live. Realize that you will choose short-term goals as well as long-term goals. You can try out a career path or two without it being what you will do for the rest of your life. Just thoughts.

They say 'if you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life' — to go with one's passion and try to make money doing so :) Farrah Gray, author of Reallionaire and young male multimillionaire suggests asking one's self this question about a career path, "What would I do for years and years to come and not have to get paid?" That does makes a lot of sense ;)

Here is a website to search various careers: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'accountants', 'engineers' or whatever other career that piques one's interest.

I went through a similar stage trying to figure out what university to go to. Why dont you do something brand new and join the military? It could be really rewarding because it will be exciting and you will be able to serve your country. Visit the website on http://www.military-school.org/.

Good luck : )

Please help…music theory?

OK, I have this worksheet from music theory and it is killing me. It gives a sheet full of measures with two notes and you need to identify the intervals. Maybe I could give you the first three and you could help explain this to me? My instructor isn't cutting it. I need that *lightbulb* moment.

For example..

F to E sharp

E to D

B to F

How can I tell the difference between major, minor, augemented, diminished? I know it has to do with certain ones only applying to thirds, fourths, fifths etc…but what about the ones (like thirds) that can be more than one category…please help. Thanks.

Ok, to determine intervals what you do is count the number of half steps. A half step is the distance from note to note. So A to A# (A sharp) is a half step. Then A# to B is another half step. This pattern continues except for a few exceptions. One half step up from E is an F, not an E sharp. Music theory teachers like to call it an E sharp just to confuse you and be technical (not kidding, it makes no sense), but really E sharp and F are the same exact note. The same thing works for B to C. Think of it as there being no E sharp and no B sharp.

Ok so for those problems….since an F and an E sharp are really the same note, that interval is one whole octave (12 half steps). For the next one

E>F>F#>G>G#>A>A#>B>C>C#>D is 10 half steps, which is the interval called a minor 7th. (Note that if it went up 2 more half steps, D>D#>E, then you would be back where you started at E because that total of 12 half steps is an octave)

The next one

B>C>C#>D>D#>E>F is 6 half steps. 5 half steps equals an interval of a 4th and 7 half steps equals an interval of a 5th. So 6 half steps is in between that, its an augmented 4th.

The other stuff is a real pain to explain because its basically useless when talking about music. I'll put a link in the source box. I really hope that at least helps somewhat, and I regret not being able to explain it better.

1) one octave

2) diminished 7th (i think)

3) errrrm… i dont know sorry! (its been a while since i did grade 5 theory….)
