I'm a 9th grader and let's say this, I want to advance ahead but my algebra class is keeping me back. Now since it is at a slower rate, there are somethings that I don't know that I have to learn (aka logarithms.) The class is too easy for me but to go to 10th grade honors geometry i need to pass algebra, so what are some tips you can give me to work on for the next year or two so that i can get to calculus by 11th grade. Please, I want to go to MIT, so, yeah, help would be appreciated.

Wow, um calm down. You'll have to take calculus in college anyway. I go to one of my state's best high schools, and I'm a top honors student. I'm not taking AP Calc until senior year, and that's how it should be. What is it with you and every other freshman wanting to skip math courses? It's not that algebra, geometry, trig, and calculus are necessarily higher levels of math, they are drastically different branches of math and you'll look really stupid in upper level high school math classes when you don't know fundamental concepts taught back in, say, geometry. Trust me, you should definitely stick to your math class, and preferably STAY IN HONORS. That's the best thing you can do, and that's what big name schools like MIT like. If you are determined to learn logarithms early on though, ask your math teachers for extra help. They are there to teach you, and if they don't, then they aren't doing their job. Also, seek advice or help from AP Calc or Honors Pre-Calc teachers. For more resources, sign up at a Sylvan Learning Center. (I'm really not trying to put you down.) If you're going to take a math course that way advanced, you're going to need tutoring to help you fully grasp the material. GOOD LUCK.

Sorry, but the majority of schools will not let you take AP Calculus until senior year. Unless you're in some very prestigious school or some highly accelerated program, you take:

Geometry- 9th

Algebra II- 10th

Pre Calculus- 11th

Calculus- 12th

If you're in Algebra I now, then look into taking a summer course if your schools offers it to get ahead. I've heard of one school where it was actually possible to take:

Algebra II- 9th

Pre Calculus- 10th

Calculus- 11th

Statistics- 12th

Keep in mind that was the only school I knew like that. No other school I know offers that kind of thing. Most places the earliest you can take Calculus is in 12th grade. I don't believe it's even possible to take Calculus in 10th grade unless you're a math prodigy of some type. About MIT, I've known people who got into MIT and took AP Calculus in 12th grade. Don't sweat it.

at least the way my school works:

9th-algebra1

10th-geometry

11th-algebra2

12-precalc

college-calc

this means you have to skip 2 classes. see if your school system offers summer school classes for people who want to get ahead. If you want to get ahead this year, try talking to your teacher. they might reccomend some tutor or book that will advance you through the material quicker so you can get ahead faster. Frankly, if you're on grade level in math, you can kiss your mit dreams goodbye.

I took the following

Pre-algebra-6th grade

Algebra 1 honors-7th grade

Geometry honors-8th grade

Pre Calculus-9th grade

AP Calculus AB-10th grade

AP Statistics-11th grade (Currently)

Try taking tutoring, or online tutoring, it'll help speed up what you are learning, and once you know algebra, then you'll be ready to advance to Calculus!

go to summer school so you can finish an extra course
